20 October 1951 – “Appomattox, VA – Appomattox high school’s Ray Wingfield muffed his big moment at football glory here Friday night.
“Wingfield intercepted an Altavista high school pass and dashed 90 yards downfield. Then he stopped and handed the ball to the referee – the ony person within yards of him.
“It was only then that Wingfield discovered he was on the Altavista five-yard line – not across the goal line, as he had thought.
“Fortunately for Wingfield, Appomattox went on to win the game handily, 45-0.”
