10 October 1886 – “After a romantic courtship carried on through the mails two federal veterans of the Soldiers home, at Hampton, Va., were married Thursday to two Virginia ladies in Appomattox county. The ceremony took place not many miles from the spot where General Lee surrendered. The parties to the romantic double marriage were Thomas Gallagher, aged 49, and Miss Maggie Duncan, aged 28; William Smith, aged 46, and Ellen Woodson, aged 21. The contracting parties had never met until a few hours before the nuptials.”
