29 October 1955 – “The wedding of Miss Nelwyn Antholene O’Brien, daughter of Mr. James Howard O’Brien of Appomattox, and James Allen Smith, son of James Whiteford Smith of Mullins took place Saturday, Oct. 29.
“The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Omer Barnett, assisted by the Rev. Charles Addington in the New Hope Baptist Church in Appomattox.
“Mrs. George R. Strickland, pianist, and Mrs. Wyatt C. O’Brien, vocalist, presented a program of wedding music.
“Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a ballerina length dress of white Italian silk. The bouffant skirt was attached at the lowered waistline with self-cording. Her ballerina veil of English illusion was attached to a double circlet of tulle petals and trimmed with sequins and earls. She carried a cascade bouquet of white roses, showered with stephanotis and centered with a white orchid.
“Mrs. John William Hoskman, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. She wore a ballerina dress of mauve shantung cut on princess lines. A cap shaped design of velvet roses formed the headband. She carried a cascade bouquet of yellow autumn flowers.
“Lewis Smith, brother of the groom, was best man. Ushers were Richard Smith O’Brien, brother of the bride and John Bullerdick.
“A reception followed the ceremony at the home of the bride. For their wedding trip the bride wore a tweed suit with brown accessories and the orchid from her bridal bouquet. Upon their return they will make their home in Appomattox.
“The bride is a graduate of Madison College, Harrisonburg, Va. She is employed as County Librarian in Appomattox.
“The groom, a graduate of Clemson College, is with the Virginia Agricultural Extension Service in Appomattox County.”
