Hi Betty - it appears we are related. I have a Samuel Dibrell Franklin (m. to Margaret Lou Amos), and I do have Samuel as the son of Frederick Henry Franklin (m. to Martha Ann Goin). The burial place for Frederick is Rt. 614, "near Joe Goin's house, " Clover Hill, Appomattox Co., VA. I'm not sure exactly where that location is on the map, as I do know that it is on private property and I haven't pursued getting a photo of the graveyard. I can only assume that his wife, Martha, also is buried there, but I am not sure.

Now for my confusion, and I hope you can help. I have a Roland that is the son of Samuel, but I have his name as Roland Robert Franklin. Am I incorrect? I have him as married to Letha Catlett. Is that correct? I can see by my records that I did not go far with this family...but I do have a Robert Franklin as the son of Roland. Can you help me fill the holes in there? If you are a daughter of that Robert, then we are fifth cousins 1x removed. Pretty far out there, but connected nonetheless! You can reach me at publisher AT appomattoxnews.com (replace the AT with the symbol and lose the spaces).

My father was Robert (Pete) Franklin. Son of Roland Scott Franklin, son of Samuel Dibble Franklin, Son of Frederick H. Franklin, Son of Jesse Franklin. I am trying to find out where Frederick H. Franklin from Appomattox is buried. Do you happen to have him in your family tree and could tell me where he is buried? He died in 1924 born in 1837 Dec. His wife was Martha A. Goin born in Jan. 1835 and died in May 22, 1907. Thanks Betty

Hi Hope - Luther and his wife are buried at Liberty Cemetery. You and I are third cousins, as your grandfather's grandfather was Doctor Meredith Goin. Doctor is second great-grandfather to you and to me. I'll contact you.

Hello Jane. You can choose to get the RSS feed so that you're notified when I update the site (which I will do more frequently this fall). Your great-grandfather probably is not in my site, but I may have information about him in my databases. I did a quick search on Ancestry.com, and I could not find your great-grandfather. It would help if I had the names of his children, as often I can find information by going backwards. You can contact me at publisherATappomattoxnewsDOTcom, if you'd like.

Hi Frank - unfortunately, my newspaper source online revealed little information. When I searched further, Frank's death merited one small paragraph in a longer article that talked about "The Flood Toll in Virginia." That paper was out of Williamsport, PA, (The Progress-Index), and dated 18 March 1966.

I'm sure that if you find a local newspaper from around that date, the information might be more forthcoming. Sorry I could not help you further!

Hi Linda - what an amazing story you provided. I'll do a quick search this morning to see if I can find any other articles. I discovered that article at newspaperarchives.com. I don't know if they have a month by month capability for payment, but you might want to see if they do. You'd probably find a few stories, as a story such as this would be found in several newspapers. Unfortunately, they probably would all say the same thing, unless it's a local paper that focused on your uncle specifically.

Hi Linda,

My mother's brother, Charles T. Willock, Jr., I believe is the flier named in the 8 May 1942 article. This is the first piece of information, other than what my Mom was able to tell me (she passed at age 70 in 1998). She was about 10 years younger than her Charles (they called him "Junie"). Her mom died when she was 3, and her Dad was an atty and not "present" for his remaining children, esp with his wife dying at 37 (in 1931 - pregnant with twins at the time). My Mom said that Charles was not supposed to be on that plane; that he had offered to take the place of an airman who had partied too hard the previous night and asked him to replace him on that mission.

I would like to know even more about that investigation and will continue my search. If you learn anything more, would you please be willing to let me know.

Thank you so much.

You'll have to tell me more - we may be related! Franklins are peppered throughout my lineage, but Taylor doesn't ring a bell. So, you could be a long-lost (er...never found?) cousin.

Hi Floyd - actually, I have photos of all the stones in that cemetery, taken just this summer. However, I'm highly disorganized at the moment...can you be patient to the tune of about a week? I'll see what I can find on Preston and Mary. I think I also have that family in my database, so I'll check there as well. I'm related to Fergusons and one Baldwin (and I cannot find her or her daughter after 1903). Perhaps we can help each other...
